# The Increasing Importance of Geomembranes in the Oil and Gas Sector

Every year, the U.S. oil and gas industry safely manages billions of barrels of produced water, creating opportunities to advance infrastructure, efficiency, and environmental performance. As production volumes continue to rise, operators are increasingly focusing on the systems that support fluid handling and containment.

Research has shown that storage and transfer infrastructure presents one of the greatest opportunities for improvement, accounting for approximately half of reported spills in a [multi-state study](https://www.gwpc.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/pw_report_2017___final.pdf).

The result is a growing **industry-wide commitment** to stronger containment solutions, better risk management, and more resilient operations. By prioritizing these critical systems, operators are reducing environmental exposure while supporting safer, more sustainable production.

That's a wake-up call. A large share of the industry's environmental risk lives in infrastructure often treated as secondary, and that realization is changing how operators think about containment.

For decades, containment was a compliance checkbox. A line-item commodity bought on price. But three pressures have since pushed it from afterthought to mission-critical infrastructure:

- - Rising environmental scrutiny from federal (EPA SPCC) and state regulators
    - An intensifying ESG mandate, where one incident can erode the "social license to operate"
    - Growing produced water volumes demanding more storage, recycling, and reliable barriers

Together, these forces have made containment strategy inseparable from operational strategy. A leak is never just a leak. The true cost of a containment system is often revealed only after years of exposure and stress, and when it fails, the bill arrives in layers: environmental remediation running into the millions per site, regulatory penalties, operational shutdowns, long-term groundwater liabilities that persist for decades, and the insurance and reputational exposure that follow into the next permit cycle. Prevention isn't an expense, it's risk mitigation.

This is the work geomembranes do. Together with geotextiles and geogrids, they protect soil, groundwater, and surface water from treated effluents, hydrocarbons, and harsh chemicals across a wide range of applications in the Oil & Gas Sector. Core applications include:

- - Hydraulic fracturing wastewater containment![Water-Containment-Blog](https://blog.ecp.itape.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Water-Containment-Blog.webp?width=350&height=256&name=Water-Containment-Blog.webp)
    - Temporary and long-term oilfield pit liners — reserve pits, frac ponds, flowback storage
    - Secondary containment and pad liners — beneath tanks, pumps, and transfer stations
    - Above-ground impoundments for storage and recycling
    - Floating covers — reducing evaporation, odors, and wildlife interaction
    - Tank liners and drilling pad waste containment
    - Decommissioning, remediation, and waste management

Amongst the many geomembranes on the market, woven coated reinforced polyethylene geomembranes stand out by delivering the key advantages operators value most: greater durability, lighter weight, and faster installation. Just as importantly, the ability to fabricate large, factory-welded panels can dramatically reduce field seam requirements—helping lower installation risk and accelerate deployment schedules.

It's also where the real economics surface. While material cost often dominates procurement discussions, it rarely tells the whole story. Installation labor, field welding, transportation, deployment time, and long-term maintenance frequently represent a far larger share of total project cost - and they're precisely the line items a lighter, factory-fabricated system reduces. A liner that ships cheaper but demands more crew hours, more field seams, and more repairs over its service life can quietly become the most expensive option on site. Smart buyers evaluate containment on total cost of ownership and documented lifecycle performance, not the price of the roll.

These advantages come together in advanced reinforced systems such as [ECP's AquaMaster](https://ecp.itape.com/geomembrane-solutions/)® family of HDPE and reinforced polyethylene geomembranes, built on three principles:![Aquamaster-Product](https://blog.ecp.itape.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Aquamaster-Product.jpg?width=350&height=256&name=Aquamaster-Product.jpg)

| **STRONGER** | AquaMaster woven coated fabrics incorporate exclusive polyolefin coatings for maximum toughness, abrasion resistance, puncture and tear resistance. |
| --- | --- |
| **LIGHTER** | High tensile strength without excessive thickness means lower freight costs, easier handling, and simpler remote deployment. |
| **FASTER** | Lightweight panels can be factory-fabricated in environmentally controlled buildings, producing high-QC welds and dramatically reducing field seam count—so crews deploy faster with less downtime. |

That same engineering holds flexibility from Middle Eastern heat to the Canadian Arctic.

With billions of barrels of produced water moving through storage and transfer systems every year, containment failures remain one of the industry's most persistent operational and environmental risks. The question is no longer whether to invest in advanced geomembranes, but which.

So as you plan your next pit liner, impoundment, or secondary containment project: *are your containment systems built to keep pace with the very risks they exist to prevent?*
